Old School Film Hack

Where is this?

Okay, here’s the latest edition:

  • Where did I find this bauble?
  • What’s the name of the body of water where this is?
  • What famous attraction used to be based in the same area?
  • What uninhabited island is nearby and why is it significant?

    1. California
    2. The harbor next to the tall glass building
    3. Disney San Francisco
    4. Alcatraz, because it's Alcatraz

WTF does Larry Ellison need a real AC boat for these days when they're sailing pu**y-a**, helmet-required catamarans? FTS

1 – Going after the low hanging fruit again are we? That answer simply won't do. After all, California is *only* 163,000+ square miles in size — I'm looking for a more specific location.
    2 – Hint: that's not a harbor.
3 – ??? What have you been smoking and why aren't you sharing it?
4 – *Klaxon horn of disapproval*

    I don't think it's a 12-meter. i think it's an IACC yacht which were used in the America's Cup from 1992 to 2007.

And I'm also going to guess that this is USA-71, a trial boat which was never raced, and which is now In a lake at Oracle HQ, Redwood City, CA.

Marine World/Africa USA used to be where Oracle HQ is now.

And the nearby uninhabited island is Bair Island which is significant because it provides critical habitat for a variety of species, including the endangered California clapper rail and the Salt marsh harvest mouse,

I still had Doc's comment preserved in email, so here it is:

O Docker has left a new comment on your post “Where is this?”:

    3. Marine World/Africa U.S.A

    4. That's not an uninhabited island, it's my Catalina 30, which, admittedly, I don't sail as much as I used to.

It is amazing what you can find with the Google. There is a list on the web of all the IACC yachts showing who owned them and where they are now, if known. Only one of the BMW Oracle IACC yachts seems to be in California (which I knew is where you were last week.) After that the rest was easy.

Then I found you can even see it in the satellite view on Google maps.

    Ain't technology grand?

Have circumnavigated Bair Island on a kayak while Sun Po was docked at Pete's Harbor. Amusement park was too easy.

In 1993 or 94 jubilant boaters set Bair Island afire with July 4th – let's shoot some flares! Redwood City fire department had no means to extinguish the fire so it burned through the night.

Kayaking that area would be cool!

I think we visited the marine park there when I was a kid. There was one down at San Diego and another to the far north (different companies and we were living in Ontario at the time), and I remember that it took forever for us to drive to the one we visited.
