Hmmmm… I wonder what these are…

26

I admit it; I’d seen these rectangles many times before, but never realized what they were until my Dad told me today.  Here are the clues:

  • They were presented at some distance above my eye-level, at an odd angle and badly illuminated.  I apologize for the graininess, but I was using a super wide-angle lens and this is a minute crop of the last image.
  • The material containing the rectangles is of all-metal construction and there are two of these panels on this specific all-metal structure (out of over 27,000 panels produced), with each panel being a mirror image of the other.
  • This particular structure originated in Buffalo, New York.  Then it meandered its way to Canada, then Alaska, then — after some time — eventually became the possession of a boys youth group in one of the states bordering the Gulf of Mexico, before finally coming to rest in Maryland back in 1964.  I don’t know when it arrived where I discovered it today, full of hope.

There you go.  Have fun!

Nope, not an electrical adapter of any kind — the panel is much larger than that. In looking at the complete image — and not just the tiny crop I presented — I estimate that the rectangles on this specific structure are roughly about the length of my hand and the panel itself is bigger than a dinner plate, but a little smaller than a cookie sheet.

And not European or any other foreign source for that matter; everything about it is bonafide as being completely American in origin.

Hi, a new face to join in the fun and welcome aboard!

Nope, not from a boat or any other water-related structure for that matter. Excellent guess though, as the structure did travel around quite a bit during it’s heyday.

The latter statement. There are two panels on this structure and two on each other structure — many thousands of identical structures in all.

That’s okay! My Dad was amazed by the speed that you discovered the source of the panel.

Now he has entered crafty-like-a-fox mode and wants to create another quiz. Be prepared, Tillerman. Be very prepared…

Go do your stuff. The next quiz won’t be ready until late tonight, as he and I are visiting, seeing things, and having a fun time together.

I googled a similar phrase to check myself and came up clear, so I figured the answer was safe at least until later this afternoon until Doc got involved.

I told my Dad that you would probably get it because I included just one word too many — and I was right.

I figured you knew that a Google search including the name of the actual Gulf state would get it. That’s why I started searching on specific Gulf state names (there aren’t that many.) Strangely enough when I tried that same search again just now it do NOT come up with the answer. Weird! I guess I got lucky.

Until then I was totally stumped. I was thinking of all sorts of things – roller coaster, zamboni, clock, scoreboard….

It was a very good quiz.

      Thanks.
