If you hike any significant distance along the C&O Canal today, this is what much of it looks like — dry as a bone and filled with plant debris.  Other areas have trees growing in it that are so thick that it’s hard to make out where the canal begins and forest ends, along with occasional pools of stagnant rain water.  Only in the sections where there are high amounts of visitors will you find the canal clear of debris and filled with moving water.
