Now for something different.  Long time readers will recognize this, as I posted an earlier version just over five years ago.

I‘ve been refining this wonderful dish for about thirteen years (I don’t even read a recipe for it now) and it’s a huge crowd pleaser.  What’s more, it’s incredibly easy to make and consists of just seven ingredients: Continue Reading →

We took off for Acadia National Park a couple of weeks ago, to celebrate our quarter-century wedding anniversary.  And one of our primary goals while visiting the Down East section of Maine was to sample their culinary delights; Cindy wanted to have lobster everyday, and I wanted to try other regional seafood (I lived in New England for a while as a kid and completely swore off lobster after my first taste of blue crab).

So we hit up some friends that have a vacation home near Acadia, and asked for recommendations.  Their response?  The lobster rolls at the Fishnet seafood shack in Blue Hill, Maine — just down the road from where we were going to be staying for several nights in Bar Harbor. Continue Reading →

Thus ends yet another disappointing crabbing season in the Chesapeake Bay.

Fishery managers and upper-level politicians from both Maryland and Virginia kept trying to promote a positive spin concerning the low numbers of crabs that were making it to market, but the truth is that — even with the end-of-year figures yet to be released — this season was one of the worst on record (you can read more about the sad state of blue crabs in the Bay here, herehere, here, herehere, and here). This post is brought to you as a public service by popular demand.  And by popular demand, I mean Cindy’s demand.

You see, Cindy is a diehard Meatasaurus Rex.  Soooo, a real dedicated carnivore, you ask?  Ha!  Dedicated carnivores are mere speed bumps in her path, with her footprints stomped firmly across their backs; she’s waaaay beyond being a dedicated carnivore — she’s on another level entirely.  Whenever we go on vacation, she generally has only one true food goal in mind — the best steak she has ever eaten.  Period.  Sure, she will try to masquerade that goal with other — healthier — sounding goals… but I’m never taken by her subterfuge. Yesterday we went down to southern Maryland to begin getting the boat ready for the water by installing the house batteries, oiling the teak interior, sopping up the small amount of moisture we had in the bilge, taking a few things home for cleaning, and prepping the standing rigging. After working up an appetite, Cindy suggested that we head over to Courtney’s Restaurant for some excellent Bay food and an update on what was happening locally. We had an opportunity to chat with the owner and premier local waterman, Tom Courtney, and what he had to share wasn’t pretty. Continue Reading →
